Ask ten locals for the best thing to do near Grass Valley in summer and nine will say the same two words: the Yuba. The South Yuba River pours out of the Sierra through a granite canyon dotted with emerald pools, sandy coves, and house-sized boulders warmed by the sun — a swimming experience that regularly makes 'best swimming holes in California' lists, and one that starts about 25 minutes from your site.

The water is snowmelt-clear with a green glow you have to see to believe. By mid-July the bigger pools warm into the 70s, and families stake out coves while confident swimmers drift the gentle current between boulders. It is, simply, the Gold Country's favorite summer ritual.

Several crossings give you different flavors of river: roadside-easy at Highway 49, historic at Bridgeport, and quiet at Purdon and Edwards Crossings on the old dirt roads out of Nevada City.

Choosing Your Swimming Hole

Highway 49 Crossing is the classic and the closest: park at the state park lot and follow trails up- or downstream to a chain of deep pools. Bridgeport, in South Yuba River State Park, adds history to the swim — its 1862 covered bridge is the longest single-span covered bridge surviving in the world, and the adjacent beach is broad, sandy, and the most family-friendly water on the river.

For solitude, take Purdon or Edwards Crossing north of Nevada City — narrow, partly dirt roads keep the crowds thin, and the pools between the two crossings along the South Yuba Trail are some of the prettiest in the canyon. Wherever you go, arrive before 10 am on summer weekends; lots fill fast.

Safety & Seasons

Respect the river in spring and early summer: snowmelt makes the current fast and the water dangerously cold well into June. Save the swimming for mid-summer, keep kids in the calmer coves, and skip the wine until you're done for the day. Water shoes earn their keep on the granite.

Outside swim season the Yuba is still worth the drive — spring wildflowers and thundering whitewater from the Highway 49 bridge, gold-panning demonstrations at Bridgeport, and the Independence Trail's gentle, historic flume-bed walking. Fall turns the canyon's big-leaf maples yellow against the green pools.
